Sliding Door

For those not-so-open-plan moments

The layout downstairs lent itself to a sliding door, so we could shut off the living room sometimes. Open plan living is great, but sometimes each member of the family needs their own space to do their own thing.

I thought this would be a simple job: buy a big piece of wood and some runners. But with a big door like this, it’s a real feat of engineering to get it to work reliably for years and years. You don’t want it to weigh a tonne, but it needs to be strong and hard-wearing in specific places and it mustn’t warp over time.

Jonathan built a bespoke door that slides away behind the fridge and freezer when not in use. The fittings are as discrete as possible and there are no guides on the floor to trip over or catch dirt.
