The Fridge & Freezer

A matching pair with heaps of space

I needed family-sized refrigeration and assumed that this would mean an American-style fridge-freezer, but Whirlpool’s elegant solution is a “pigeon pair” – two separate, matching appliances designed to link together.

The result looks great, has more storage space than a fridge-freezer with the same footprint and is more reliable because it’s two separate appliances. They bolt together solidly and the optional linking kit also contains a strip that fills the gap in between, turning two into one.

The SW8 AM2C XR UK fridge is A++ rated for energy efficiency and offers a humongous 363 litres of storage. 6th Sense intelligence monitors and fine-tunes temperature and humidity to keep food fresh longer, while an antibacterial filter cuts odours.

The matching UW8 F2C XB UK freezer is also A++ rated for energy efficiency and packs away an impressive 260 litres of frozen food, with an alarm for power cuts, frost-free running and a fast freeze button that temporarily turns the temperature down by an extra 10  to bring newly added food down in temperature quickly.

The pair have a shared design, with large, brushed stainless steel doors that really look the business and well-lit white interiors. The doors are designed to that they need only open by 90°: the appliances can be fitted tight up against the next unit or in a corner and yet you can still access the contents and open drawers fully.

I love the size of them and how well illuminated everything is. With so much storage space, there’s plenty of room for fruit and veg which stay fresh much longer. And the handles have a matt finish that doesn’t get fingerprinty. Bolted together, they feel like a single appliance.
