Cha-Cha-Cha-Changes

Decisiveness is good. But so is flexibility

A month or two into the extension, I realised that decisiveness is a superpower. Once you hit upon the right choice, it’s a relief to tick something off the list and commit to a decision.

Usually that was that: the decision was right and I felt certain and confident. But every now and then a decision would niggle because it wasn’t quite right. So sometimes I had to change decisions. And when I revised them and hit upon the right answer then I knew it, the niggles went away.

The three big things I revised were the shape of the roof, the footprint of the extension (the initial design saw it longer on one side but ultimately I extended by 4m right the way across) and then the position of the patio.

The garden slopes downwards, so I initially dreamed up a raised patio with storage underneath. But ultimately I realised that the raised patio would be costly and I wouldn’t get much storage space. It would be easier to find somewhere else to store bikes. The minute I decided to drop the patio to the same level as the garden, with steps leading down from the house, the niggling feeling resolved. I immediately knew it was the right decision and I didn’t fret over it again.
